Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter (1850) became instantly a very successful and much debated work. Set in Puritan New England during the era of the Indian wars (1642 to 1649), the narrative follows the life story of Hester Prynne, who conceives a daughter through an affair and struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity.

Hester is convicted because of adultery, but she refuses to break under the humiliation she has to suffer. Instead, she raises her child Pearl in great love and never names her partner in crime, who happens to be the community's much-respected young minister.

Morality and hypocrisy clash against each other as an exciting moral dilemma unfolds before the eyes of the public.

“The scenic spectacle of The Scarlet Letter was reinforced by Yaron Abulafia's light art.”
